Defender CSD 50

Consolidator and water repellent for stone

Product Description

Defender CSD 50 is a consolidator and water repellent for stone.

Actichem’s AP677 Defender CSD 50 is a proprietary impregnating sealer which consolidates friable material, strengthens the substrate and provides powerful water repellent properties. Although suited to a wide range of materials it is most popular with construction materials such as sandstone, limestone, clay and concrete. It reacts with the substrate material creating an extremely strong and durable bond which protects the substrate from structural weakening and erosion for many, many years.

Additional Information

  • Consolidates – Defender CSD consolidates friable and loose materials within the stone.
  • Substrate Strengthening – Defender CSD dramatically increases the strength of the substrate which in turn dramatically improves durability and longevity.
  • Water Repellency – Defender CSD is a powerful water repellent which further prevents substrate degradation caused by salt, mineral ingress and mould.
  • Limestone Protection – Provides unparalleled water ingress lock-out and strengthening to Limestone where many sealers fail.
  • Deep Penetration – Defender CSD is based on an extremely small molecule size which enables it to penetrate to between 10 and 20mm in porous substrates.
  • UV Stable – Ideally suited for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Vapour permeable – won’t trap moisture. Does not hinder the natural passage of water vapour.
  • Retains Newness – the high performance protection and long life span offered by Defender CSD is ideal for the preservation and preventative maintenance of: heritage buildings, monuments, sandstone & limestone structures, construction concrete such as bridges, marine and port structures, concrete and clay paved walkways, parking areas, stone building facades and perimeter walling, pool surrounds and patios
  • Natural Look – will not discolour or alter the natural look of recommended substrates.
Application areas and surface suitability

Defender CSD 50 is a consolidator and water repellent for stone.

Formulated to provide premium protection to porous construction materials and is ideally suited to the protection of heritage and delicate/friable/crumbling stone. Defender CSD is ideal for limestone, sandstone and concrete structures.

Expected Wear:
Defender CSD 50 will provide premium protection for up to 15 years and in many applications, several years longer. However application methods, weather conditions, traffic, harsh cleaning methods and substrate type will affect wear. Avoid use of solvents, strong acids and strong alkalis for extended sealer life.
It is recommended that the sealer be re-applied every 8 – 12 years where harsh conditions exist.

Not to be used as a sub-terrain waterproofing. Should not be applied if temperature is above 40 degrees or if rain is expected within 2 hours of application. If rain has preceded the application, the surface should be allowed 24 hours to dry completely.

How to use

Read and understand the SDS before use
Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for sensitivity to chemicals.

Coverage can vary dramatically depending on the degree of porosity, but is normally 5 to 10 m2 / Lt per coat for open structure, highly porous substrates. And 10 to 20 m2 / Lt per coat for dense, less porous substrates.

Application on large concrete areas should be based on a preset coverage rate using a dedicated sprayer or painting equipment. No subsequent removal of excess product is required.

Adhesive Compatibility:
When a tile is dip sealed prior to being installed, it will become highly water repellent. This means that a standard water based adhesive may not adhere to the surface. A suitable polymer modified grout should be used, which is designed to overcome the repellency of a penetrating sealer.
Compatible adhesives include:
1. Davco SE-7 (with Davelastic)
2. Mapie Granirapid

Surface Preparation:

  • New installations must be fully cured before application of Defender CSD 50 (Min 48 hours, however some concrete installations may take up to 7 days to cure. Confirm with the structural engineer).
  • Existing stone and grout must be totally clean, dry and chemical free.
  • Coverage can vary dramatically depending on the degree of porosity, but is normally 5 to 15 m2 / Lt per coat for open structure, highly porous substrates and 15 to 25 m2 / Lt per coat for dense, less porous substrates.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight. Temperature must be between 10°C and 28°C.
  • Highly absorbent surfaces may require two coats.

Ready to use

  1. Apply 1 to 2 coats of Defender CSD 50 by generously saturating the surface using a polish applicator, roller or sprayer to an area which can be easily reached. (Approximately 15m2).
  2. Ensure even coverage. When treating vertical surfaces, start application from the bottom, moving upwards to avoid uneven coverage.
  3. The surface must be shiny wet with a liquid film for at least 30 seconds. For very porous substrates more sealer may need to be applied.
  4. Allow 5 – 10 minutes for the sealer to absorb into the surface. On horizontal surfaces move the excess product with a squeegee to a new section.
  5. If a second coat is to be applied, wait 20 to 30 minutes and repeat the process.
  6. Using absorbent towelling or applicator, wipe off any sealer remaining on the surface after 10 minutes of the last application. Moisten the towel with Methylated Spirits to remove residues which have dried on the surface.
  7. Allow 6 – 12 hours before returning area to traffic. Keep dry for 24 hours. Achieves a full cure in 24-48 hours.
