Water marks and cellulosic browning are among the most common and frustrating post-cleaning issues.

They occur when moisture carries dissolved lignin, soil, or alkaline residues to the fibre tips during drying. These deposits leave yellow, brown, or tide-line rings that standard detergents can’t correct. Effective treatment requires either acidic neutralisation or controlled oxidation to reverse the discolouration without overwetting the carpet.

Brownaway and Conquer O2 provide two reliable solutions. Brownaway uses highly active, low-pH compounds (slightly acidic) and textile-industry polymer technology to release discolouration and remove browning/water marks from fibres. Conquer O2 uses controlled oxygen oxidation to break down stubborn organic discolouration while remaining fibre-safe. Both options deliver deep stain correction when used with ultra-low-moisture techniques.

The Chemistry Behind Browning & Water Mark Removal

Cellulosic browning is caused by dissolved lignin and alkaline residues wicking to the surface. Both methods emphasise strict moisture control to avoid re-wicking. Correction requires:

  • Acidic neutralisation to reverse alkalinity and dissolve browning residues.

Brownaway relies on low-pH salts, advanced wetting agents, and discolouration-release polymers to penetrate and reverse browning.

  • Oxidation or reduction to break down remaining discolouration on the fibre tips (Conquer O2, reducers, or other oxidisers).

Conquer O2 relies on oxygen-based oxidation combined with wetting agents and polymers that help lift and encapsulate fine particulate staining.

Equipment

  • White terry towel or microfiber cloth – By using a white towel, no other pigment will bleed onto the carpet.
  • Wet Extraction Machine – Larger stains should be treated using a wet extraction machine. This will minimise the risk of wick back and ensure an effective solution.
  • Spotting Brush and/or Gum Getter – When agitating a carpet, don’t use the brushing motion, as it will damage the carpet fibres. The best method is to tamp or firmly roll the brush over the stain.
  • Soft brush or carpet groomer – When aligning the carpet fibres, be gentle to avoid breaking or disrupting them.
  • PPE – All the necessary PPE needs to be used when working with chemicals.

The Process

  1. Method 1 – Brownaway (Acidic Neutralisation & Browning Reversal)

    1. Apply Brownaway

Use undiluted for severe browning or 1:1 for lighter areas and upholstery. Spray apply without overwetting.

    2. Agitate for Penetration

Use a carpet rake or upholstery brush to distribute the product evenly through the affected fibres.

    3. Allow 10–20 Minutes Reaction Time

Brownaway’s acidic and polymer system releases browning, lignin residues, coffee residues, and tide marks.

    4. Rinse Extract

Flush using Actichem Rinse Pro or a compatible emulsifier to remove dissolved residues and re-balance the carpet.

    5. Assist Drying

Increase airflow to prevent wick-back and ensure complete drying.

  2. Method 2 – Conquer O2 (Controlled Oxygen Oxidation)

    1. Apply Conquer O2 (RTU or 1:1)

Spray or blot lightly onto the affected area. Avoid overwetting.

    2. Agitate Gently

Use a carpet rake or upholstery brush to encourage even distribution.

    3. Allow 5 Minutes Reaction

The controlled oxidation breaks down browning, watermarks, beverage residues, and organic stains.

    4. Do Not Rinse

Allow the product to dry. It forms a brittle residue that can be vacuumed away once fully dry.

    5. Thorough Dry Vacuuming

Vacuum fibres after drying to remove the oxidised, encapsulated residues.

Further Notes

  • Replacement for Brownaway

If Brownaway is unavailable, Actichem CTR can be used as an alternative. Use the Actichem CTR in the exact same method as the Brownaway.

  • Replacement for Conquer O2

If Conquer O2 is unavailable, Spotaway U can be used as an alternative. Use the Spotaway U in the exact same method at the same dilution of 1:1 as the Conquer O2.If Conquer O2 is unavailable, Spotaway U can be used as an alternative. Use the Spotaway U in the exact same method at the same dilution of 1:1 as the Conquer O2.

  • Ultra-Sensitive fabrics & fibres

    • Apply browning treatment to a rag and blot the affected area.
    • Do not rinse, simply dry vacuum as much product away as possible to avoid adding extra moisture.
  • Rug Fringes

Rug fringes can be especially sensitive to cellulosic browning. Using a no-rinse, dry vacuum method, such as Spotaway U, can be the most effective treatment.

Key Prevention Measures

  • Strongly alkaline chemicals: Cleaning solutions with a high and/or buffered alkaline pH can cause the lignin in cellulosic fibres to dissolve and wick up to the face of the fibres.
  • Prespray: Use a neutral or acidic prespray solution.
  • Rinse: Rinse/extract using an acid rinse.
  • Dry: Leave fibres and fabrics as dry as possible.
    • Do not over-wet.
    • Apply additional vacuum strokes to remove any excess moisture.
    • Use ultra-low moisture cleaning methods for sensitive fibres
  • Assist drying: Use fans and air movers to assist drying.

The Encap Fine Fabric is an ideal cleaning solution for sensitive cellulosic fibres. It has a mildly acidic pH and can be used with low moisture methods.
