Rust stains are some of the most unforgiving defects a carpet can suffer, thanks to the oxidised metal residues that bond aggressively to fibres.

Unlike organic or oily soils, rust is an inorganic contaminant that won’t respond to traditional detergents, alkaline spotters, or solvent-based products. It requires targeted chemistry capable of breaking the iron-based bond without damaging the carpet.

Rust Remover provides this specialised action using a safe, non-corrosive formula designed for professional use. Its advanced blend of wetting and penetrating agents dissolves the stain at the source, reaching deep into affected fibres while avoiding the extreme hazards associated with traditional hydrofluoric or hydrochloric acid-based rust removers. The result is powerful stain removal with significantly reduced risk to both the technician and the carpet.

The Chemistry Behind Removing Rust from Carpet

Rust is oxidised iron, and removing it requires reduction chemistry rather than standard cleaning action. Rust Remover works by penetrating the stain and breaking down the iron oxide bond, converting the rust into a soluble form that can be rinsed out of the fibres.

Because it is not solvent-based and relies on specialised reducing agents, pH is not the key factor. Instead, the formulation’s high-performance wetting agents ensure full fibre saturation and deep penetration, enabling the reducing chemistry to access embedded rust that has migrated below the surface pile. This is why Rust Remover succeeds where detergents and solvents fail.

The product also carries the advantage of being far safer than corrosive acid systems traditionally used for rust removal, making it well-suited for use across all synthetic and natural carpet fibres when pre-tested for colour stability.

Equipment

  • White terry towel or microfiber cloth – By using a white towel, no other pigment will bleed onto the carpet.
  • Wet Extraction Machine – Larger stains should be treated using a wet extraction machine. This will minimise the risk of wick back and ensure an effective solution.
  • Spotting Brush and/or Gum Getter – When agitating a carpet, don’t use the brushing motion, as it will damage the carpet fibres. The best method is to tamp or firmly roll the brush over the stain.
  • Soft brush or carpet groomer – When aligning the carpet fibres, be gentle to avoid breaking or disrupting them.
  • PPE – All the necessary PPE needs to be used when working with chemicals.

The Process

  1. Pre-Inspection & Testing

Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location to confirm chemical and dye stability. Verify the stain is actually rust, as other yellow–brown marks may require different chemistry.

  2. Apply Rust Remover (RTU)

Use Rust Remover undiluted. Apply generously until the affected fibres are fully wetted. Full saturation is essential to allow the reducing agents to access deeper rust deposits.

  3. Agitate for Better Penetration

Use a spotting brush to gently work the product into the fibres. This improves contact and speeds the chemical reaction.

  4. Allow 10–20 Minutes Reaction Time

Let the product dwell undisturbed. The reducing agents break down the iron oxide structure and free the stain from the fibres.

  5. Rinse Extract Thoroughly

Flush the treated area using Actichem Rinse Pro or a compatible emulsifier. Extraction removes dissolved residues and restores the carpet’s pH balance and texture.

  6. Assist Drying

Blot excess moisture and increase ventilation. Air movers or open airflow help prevent wick-back and ensure complete drying.

Further Notes

  • Shadow Removal

If there is a shadow left, apply Conquer O2 and absorb or vacuum extract excess moisture, leaving the treated area slightly damp with Conquer O2. The oxidising and encapsulating action of Conquer O2 will continue to work over the next few hours as it dries completely, removing the remaining stain.
