Removing makeup stains from carpet can be tricky due to their complex, oil-rich formulations.

pigments that require targeted solutions for effective removal. Successfully tackling such stains demands a solid understanding of their composition and the use of the right cleaning techniques. In this guide, we’ll walk you through essential tips and methods to address these stubborn stains with confidence, ensuring the carpet is restored to its pristine condition.

The Role of Chemistry in removing makeup stains from carpet

Makeup, such as foundation or lipstick, often combines oils, waxes, and pigments, each contributing to the stain’s resilience. Oils allow the makeup to stick, wax adds texture, and pigments create vibrant colors, all of which can be challenging to remove from carpet fibers.

Using a solvent is the most effective approach for breaking down the oil-based components in makeup stains. If pigment traces remain, applying a hydrogen peroxide-based solution can oxidize and fade the discoloration.

Equipment

Citrus Gel is a premium quality solvent gel using powerful citrus extracts to remove tough oily spots, tar, gum, bitumen and cosmetics. It’s stable gel formula enables it to stay on the spot longer instead of running down to the base of the carpet. Ideal for gums, putty, bitumen, tar and heavy grease deposits.

To remove makeup from carpet & upholstery, you will need:

  • Citrus Gel – A premium quality solvent gel using powerful citrus extracts to remove tough oily spots, tar, gum, bitumen and cosmetics. It’s stable gel formula enables it to stay on the spot longer instead of running down to the base of the carpet.
  • White terry towel – By using a white towel, no other pigment will  bleed onto the carpet.
  • Wet Extraction Machine – Larger spills should be treated using a wet extraction machine. This will minimise the risk of wick back and ensure an effective solution.
  • Spotting Brush – When agitating a carpet, don’t use the brushing motion as it will damage the carpet fibers. The best method is to tamp or firmly roll the brush over the stain.
  • PPE – All the necessary PPE needs to be use when working with chemicals.

Ensure that you have read and understood the safety data sheet and technical information for all chemical products used. This includes a thorough understanding of directions for use and the limitations and capabilities of each product.

The Process

  1. Apply Citrus Gel

Dampen a dry, white absorbent cloth with Citrus Gel and blot onto the stained area.

  2. Agitate the Stain

Agitate the makeup stain by tamping up and down with a spotting brush to maximise penetration.

  3. Allow for Dwell Time

    Allow 5 minutes dwell time.

  4. Extraction

Rinse and extract the carpet with a wet extraction machine.

  5. Repeat if Necessary

Repeat steps 1-4 if required. Generally, these types of stains require 2-3 passes until they are fully removed.

  6. Shadow Removal

If there is a shadow left, apply Conquer O2 and absorb or vacuum extract excess moisture, leaving the treated area slightly damp with Conquer O2. The oxidising and encapsulating action of Conquer O2 will continue to work over the next few hours as it dries completely, removing the remaining stain.

Further Notes

  • Alternative Products

If the Citrus Gel is unavailable or not responding then try the Conquer or Conquer O2. These two products are encapsulating products designed to encase the soil and separate it from the fibers, enabling it to be vacuumed out.

  • Encapsulation Method

If encapping or using a low moisture cleaning procedure, use Conquer in place of Citrus Gel.

  • Solutions for delicate fibers and fabrics

The best solution for delicate carpets including wool, is the Citrus Gel or Conquer.
