A complete guide to the use and application of Biosan II

August 4th, 2020 | Infection Control

Why is Biosan II the best product on the market for fogging applications, and how do I use it to get the best results possible?

COVID-19 disinfection

The following guide relates specifically to area where COVID-19 treatment or preventative applications are required.

  • General cleaning and disinfecting, dilute Biosan II 1:16 and allow 10 minutes dwell time.
  • Fogging – once off heavy duty fogging dilute 1:32
  • Fogging – frequent (as in twice a day) dilute 1:64. Leave the area for 60 minutes before re-entering.
  • Safe for use in food areas. However wiping down of food preparation areas is recommended especially after heavy duty fogging (1:32).
Recommended dilutions

The following recommendations, are based on data obtained from extensive testing at micro-laboratories.

  • 1:16 COVID-19 decontamination
  • 1:16 Mould remediation
  • 1:32 Anti-bacterial, dirty surface, hospital grade disinfection
  • 1:64 Anti-bacterial, clean surface, hospital grade disinfection

Standard dwell time: 10 minutes

  • 1:32 Fogging – Once off, heavy-duty (COVID-19) fogging
  • 1:64 Fogging – Frequent treatment

Standard dwell/dry time 30-60 minutes

Application method notes

Trigger spray or direct pour
Apply Biosan II solution direct to the surface or pre-moisten a clean cloth/wipe. Wipe over the affected area. Special attention should be paid to touch points. Allow to air dry. A correctly treated surface will dry in 10-15 minutes.
Cloth type
Avoid use of microfibre and cotton cloths with Biosan II, as they have conflicting charges to most disinfectants and can reduce its effectiveness. Disposable cloths such as chux cloth work well and facilitate good air-drying effect.

Clean first, then disinfect (2 step)
If the surface is visibly dirty or been subject to bio-contamination by blood or body fluids, it must be cleaned first. If bio-contaminants are present, use Biosan II solution for this cleaning step. The surface must be rinsed with clean water and/or wiped dry.
Once the surface is clean, then perform the disinfecting step using Biosan II solution using the process described above.

Clean and disinfect (1 step)
If the surface is not visibly dirty clean and disinfect in one step using the process described above.

Mist spray and fogging

Large area disinfecting can benefit from the use of mist spray or fogging equipment. This process provides and effective means of getting disinfectant solution to every surface in an area.

Mist spray
Apply Biosan II solution through a pump-up pressure sprayer. Use a fine mist and avoid over-wetting. Allow to air dry. A correctly treated surface will dry in 20-40 minutes. Touch points must be wiped with a premoistened cloth for effective disinfection. Note – ensure the area being treated is not inhabited, water sensitive materials are removed, and air conditioning systems are turned off.
Fogging
Fog Biosan II solution through cold/wet fogging equipment. Avoid over-wetting. Pools and runs should not be visible. Use suitable respiratory protection (Filter type Type A Class 1 or 2 or Filter type CF22 A2). A correctly treated surface will dry in 20-40 minutes. Touch points must be wiped with a premoistened cloth for effective disinfection.
Note – ensure the area being treated is not inhabited, water sensitive materials are removed, and air conditioning systems are turned off.

Surface compatibility

When used as directed, Biosan II is safe on virtually all water cleanable hard surfaces. Carpets, fabrics and leather are also treated successfully with Biosan II, however it is recommended to pretest for chemical or moisture sensitivity. Biosan II is cationic in nature and can affect the stain resistance treatment on Stainmaster nylon carpet.

All the ingredients in Biosan II are classified as food safe. It is safe to use in food preparation facilities however surfaces which have direct food contact (eg cutting boards) must be rinsed with potable water in keeping with food authority guidelines.

Rinsing vs wiping vs air-drying

Surfaces which are visibly clean can be wiped dry or air dried. Air drying provides maximum disinfection and allows for residual biocide to provide longer protection.
Wiping surfaces with a cloth pre-moistened with Biosan II solution, dislodges body oils and grime and provides the very best disinfection outcome. Ensure surfaces left to air dry do not take longer than the times prescribed.

Flooring

For general purpose floor cleaning and sanitising use the following procedure.

  1. Mix 160ml Biosan II with 10 litres clean water.
  2. Apply solution using a mop bucket, flat mop system or autoscrubber.
  3. Allow to air dry. A correctly treated surface will not take longer than 10 minutes to dry.

Bio-contaminated surfaces should be treated separately with a 1:16 – 1:32 Biosan II solution according to the instructions given above.

Surface compatibility

When used as directed, Biosan II is safe on virtually all water cleanable hard surfaces. However, please note the following points;
Carpets, fabrics and leather are also treated successfully with Biosan II, however it is recommended to pretest for chemical or moisture sensitivity. Biosan II is cationic in nature and can affect the stain resistance treatment on Stainmaster nylon carpet.
Brass & Non-ferrous metals can be affected by chemical solutions. Pretesting for chemical sensitivity is recommended. Take extra care and wipe dry. Do not allow to air dry.
Electronics can be affected by chemical solutions. Pretesting for chemical sensitivity is recommended. Do not spray directly onto electronics. Use a pre-moistened cloth. Electronics are also effectively disinfected using Kwiksan alcohol spray.

Food preparation areas

All the ingredients in Biosan II are classified as food safe. It is safe to use in food preparation facilities however surfaces which have direct food contact (eg cutting boards) must be rinsed with potable water in keeping with food authority guidelines.

Best practice procedures

Consult with information from your local health authority for disinfection frequency and procedures. Recommendations made in this document stand subject to health authority instructions.
Non-touch Points
Surfaces such as walls (above 2.5m), ceilings, etc can be treated initially with Biosan II solution by fog or spray. Residual biocide will remain on these surfaces indefinitely unless subjected to moisture, wiping or touching. It is therefore not necessary to frequently treat such surfaces.
Touch Points
Touch points should be treated more frequently in accord with the frequency of usage or traffic.

Expiry dates

Biosan II (concentrate) – has a 12-month expiry date.
Biosan II – Ready to Use as supplied by Actichem has a 12-month expiry date.
Biosan II – ready to use which has been created by on-site dilution of the concentrate Biosan II, has a shelf life of 3 months

Label notes

When viewing the Biosan II labels and the Biosan II ready to use labels, it is likely that you will notice some directions that differ from the directions provided above. The reason for this is due to TGA listing requirements. The label amendments are to be read in the context of healthcare use, which is TGA’s main focus. These statements are explained below;

  • Hard Surface Disinfectant Only – for hospitals this defines it as not being a product for laundry use, etc. In the restoration industry its recommended use on contaminated carpets and fibres still remains acceptable.
  • Not to be used on skin – this distinguishes it from an antiseptic for wound care, etc. It is no more or less hazardous on skin as before. Always follow safety directions as provided.
  • Not to be used on medical devices and other therapeutic devices – this statement distinguishes it from sterilants which are used for sterilising medical instruments which are used on humans such as scalpels, needles, tubes, etc. All non-therapeutic/medical devices surfaces are safe for disinfecting with Biosan II as a hospital grade disinfectant. This includes floors, walls, trolleys, beds, tables, desks, chairs, etc.
